Beavers are back in Devon!

Beavers are amazing, capable of transforming our rivers and wetlands for the better. Devon Wildlife Trust has led beaver conservation projects in Devon for more than a decade. Our work on the River Otter Beaver Trial (England's first wild beaver re-introduction project), and the work of The Wildlife Trusts elsewhere, has shown that these natural engineers can provide an impressive range of services from storing climate-changing carbon to flood alleviation. We believe it’s a top priority for nature’s recovery to see their return to rivers across the UK and in February 2025, in a milestone decision, the government agreed.

Allowing all wild beaver populations in England to remain and expand naturally. This includes beaver populations on the Rivers Tamar, Taw and Exe. Beavers on the River Otter already have licence to remain in the wild.

More beavers will now be allowed under licence for Natural England and every release will need a ten year project plan detailing how beavers will be managed in the wild to reduce any potential conflicts.

Flea Treatments on our pets.

Please be aware of the harmful effects of commonly used flea treatments to our local wildlife

along with damage to our rivers and their aquatic life.

Please read further information below -

Twenty-four environmental and veterinary organisations –

including

The Progressive Veterinary Association, Veterinary Poisons Information Service, RSPB and The Wildlife Trusts –

have written an

open letter calling on the UK Government to ban five toxic pesticides from being included in medicines for cats and dogs.

These include:

  • fipronil
  • permethrin
  • imidacloprid
  • dinotefuran
  • nitenpyram

  • The draft letter emphasises the harm to bees from these chemicals.
  • However locally riverfly populations that are the food supply for fish in the river Dart are being severely harmed from these substances entering the river, largely via domestic septic tank soakaways and garden drainage.
  • As the public water supply is ‘piped’ down the Exe from Wimbleball reservoir they end up in the domestic water supply.
  • The upper reaches of the river Dart, a key Exe tributary pass through our parish.
  • If other parishioners too would find the time to also address our MP that would be very helpful to this cause.
